Doctors at Frederick Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers: Sinus inflammation is 'a quality-of-life detriment'

Doctors at Frederick Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers recommend that patients who suffer from sinus inflammation seek expert help to relieve symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Nasal inflammation -- also known as sinusitis -- is a common ailment and can be caused by a simple cold or allergies, according to the American Sinus Institute. Nasal inflammation can cause swelling of the tissue that lines the sinuses. This inflammation can cause blocked passageways, leading to symptoms of sinusitis and even infection, causing a decrease in quality of life.

"That's why facial pain is always considered a sinus pathology and a very common complaint and symptom of folks who have a sinus pathology, and it's very much of a quality-of-life detriment for folks who suffer from those issues," Dr. Jamie Oberman of Frederick Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers said.

There are four different types of nasal inflammation, according to American Sinus Institute. Acute nasal inflammation comes on very suddenly and includes pain that does not go away after 10 to 14 days but doesn't last more than four weeks. Sub-acute nasal inflammation lasts four to eight weeks. Chronic inflammation lasts eight weeks or longer. Recurrent inflammation consists of several repeated attacks, which happen within the time frame of one year.

Approximately 37 million Americans suffer from acute nasal inflammation at least once a year, according to the American Sinus Institute.

It's important for patients to figure out the nature of their symptoms to choose the best course of action for relieving pain. If you think you might benefit from seeing a doctor, take this Sinus Self-Assessment Quiz.
